NAKED SPACE: PARTNER MEDITATIONS

Allow yourself to be guided into deeply restful meditations. Make contact with the still center of your self. Extend your meditative state outwards and connect with others in surprising and subtle ways.

Meditation is the art of consciousness, and consciousness is the action/reaction of awareness. In meditation, we surrender our thinking minds and shine the light of our attention on the experience of being. The fun of meditation is what happens during the practices; the fruit of meditation is how the practices affect the quality of our life.

For many, the idea of meditation musters images of extreme isolation and disconnection; the monk in his cell, the hermit in his cave. At the same time, we're told that meditation dissolves barriers and eases the feelings of separation that plague our hearts. Introducing a partner into meditation re-informs the mythic image while directly engaging the connection that exists beyond the limit of thinking yet well within our imaginations.

Reveal your body, uncover your mind, and discover there is no separation at all.

MICHAEL GATES

I'm so excited to witness the birth and growth of SOMA. It's the synthesis and extension of two things I hold dear in life: the practice of yoga and being naked.

I began my practice of yoga with a familiar set of goals in mind: improve flexibility, reduce stress, and vaguely engage with something I wouldn't at the time have called spiritual. Now more than ten years later, those early goals seem equally closer and farther away; I take it as a healthy sign of my practice that I'm ok with the paradox. Perhaps even progress.

As far back as I can remember, I've enjoyed being naked. I give thanks to my parents for their permission and wisdom in this when I was a boy. Though I learned different lessons about nudity from the world at large, a core of personal comfort with the naked body stayed with me until I reached an age when I was again ready to share the experience with others. For these early opportunities, I give thanks to my friends for their understanding and camaraderie.

At home I combined yoga and nudity with abandon, but I was frustrated by how few opportunities I found to share in a community of like-minded practitioners. That's when it occurred to me that I didn't have to look any further than my own studio. This was the seed that grew into Naked Space, now in it's fifth year of offering a safe and supportive community in Brooklyn for the unclothed practice of meditation, yoga and massage. All are welcome.

I'm proud to acknowledge these colleagues who share in the practice of spiritually-active nudity:
